Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan (Freeing Indian Farmer – Annadatas – from Risks) is an ambitious initiative which aims to create a nation-wide platform to enable insurance access to 5 million smallholder farmers and their families across India. It is a joint public initiative from NAFPO (a nation-wide collaborative platform to support institutional development of FPOs) and Samunnati – India’s largest agri-tech enterprise steered by a vision of making markets work for smallholders farmers.
Challenges
Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan aims to address two systemic challenges in India:
- High incidence of farmer accident related fatalities – 2,080 farming accidents and 120 fatalities happen everyday, leading to estimated daily losses worth INR 15Cr
- Negligible insurance penetration, with only 0.94% farmers having access to accident-related insurance
NAFPO and Samunnati have come together to solve this problem by creating a highly subsidized tailor-made accident insurance product covering the needs of smallholder farmers in India and ensuring a scalable, technology-based claims-settlement process.
The initiative was successfully launched on 2nd October, 2021 by Hon’ble Union Agriculture Minister Shri Narendra Singh Tomar and we have covered 10,000+ farmers so far.
